The Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU)

Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU) was established in 1997, being among the first private universities to be accredited in Tanzania in the year 2000, it has since then received local, regional and international recognition. 
It was the idea of Prof Hubert C.M Kairuki and his wife Mrs Kokushubira Kairuki to establish the University, moved by the situation in Tanzania after independence in 1961, whereby diseases, poverty and ignorance were declared the country’s key enemies.
Initially HKMU University was established as Mikocheni International University of Health Sciences (MIUHS), with a focus towards addressing training needs for health professionals in Tanzania, and in sub-Saharan Africa.
In 1998 the name was changed to Mikocheni International University, anticipating the possibility of expanding beyond health sciences. Finally in February 1999 the University’s name was changed to Hubert Kairuki Memorial University, in the honour of the founder, Prof Hubert Kairuki, after he passed away.
The University is expanding into other programs and disciplines of science and humanities. Recent established training programs include; Master of Social Work, Master of Science in Public Health, Research and Development in Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms.
HKMU is growing to a level where it is becoming the pride of private Universities in the East African region due to the quality and excellence of its programs. Currently the University has attracted students from over 15 different nationalities, external funding and technical support for collaborative research and development activities.
To become a model private University in Tanzania and Africa in providing highest quality education, research and exemplary service to public with conducive learning and working environment.
To educate liberally and broadly, qualify men and women to advance frontiers of knowledge through research, and provide consultancy and advisory services to the public.
Functions of the University are:

To engage in commercial and other income-generating activities, in line with the national laws, the HKMU Charter and rules.
The University Charter
The University authorises its mandate from the University Act No.7 of 2005, and is governed by the University Charter, University Council, and the Senate. The Charter was signed by the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on 24th March 2010. Provisions for establishment, functions, administration, powers, rules, staff and members of the University are stipulated in the University Charter.
The University Council
Governance and control of the University is under the Council, which is the principal policy making body of the University in ensuring that the University operates smoothly. It approves policies and plans appropriate to its three core functions: teaching, research and consultancy.
The University Senate
The Senate is the principal decision making organ in all academic matters of the University, responsible for the control and regulation of the instructions, education, research and consultancy within the University.

Brief History of Governance
The late Prof. Hubert C.M. Kairuki, was the Institution’s Founding Vice Chancellor.
The late Dr. Ali Omar Juma, former Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, was the first Chancellor of the University. After his death in 2001, Hon. Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim took over as the Chancellor of the University to the present time
The Second Vice Chancellor was Prof. Esther D. Mwaikambo ( 2000-2006)
Prof. Keto E. Mshigeni was the third Vice Chancellor ( 2006- 2016)



Prof. Charles S. Mgone is the fourth and the current Vice Chancellor.


Admissions Procedures

Applicants are required to apply directly to the University through an online application portal available at: with a non-refundable application fee of TZS 50,000 or US$ 50 deposit receipt made to the University’ account.
Students should indicate the school/department of their choice and the duration of their intended stay as per the application form
Students must stay for the whole period of studies
No remuneration or financial aid for students is available except for those coming under an exchange programme
A student will be discontinued on any serious breach of University regulations or irregular attendance.
Admissions Committee
The Admissions Committee will be presented with short-listed candidates, by the admissions Officer. The final approval for admission will be granted by Senate. Candidates who do not meet the conditions for admission as stated in the Prospectus will be notified after application. Approved students are required to present original certificates for the Admissions Office to authenticate them.
Transferring Students
Careful scrutiny will done, confidential report must be brought from the Institution the candidate was previously admitted. Transfer due to discontinuation, disciplinary or poor academic performance will not be accepted. For a transferring student to get the University’s qualification, at least 50% of the training, must take place at the University. Students who do not have transferable credits will have to sit and pass relevant end of semester examinations as matriculation.
Visiting Students
Admission of Visiting Students or special admission will operate under the Principle of Academic Credit Transfer. Under this scheme HKMU and the other institutions will communicate and agree on the transfer. Students who have completed one or two years of higher education elsewhere may be admitted to complete the course. For students who are transferring permanently, careful review will be done. Incase of doubt, especially regarding academic performance, the transferred student will be required to repeat the course.
Occasional Students (Electives)
Non-members of the University who wish to carry out elective period attachments at HKMU, will be admitted by approval of the Dean of the Faculty and Chairperson of the department concerned, and upon payment of fees. Such persons are not eligible to take University Examinations.
Application Procedures for Electives
Interested applicants should send a letter of intent to HKMU, with the following attachments:
A letter of introduction from the current University or College
Curriculum Vitae
2 passport size photographs
A summary of the objectives of the proposed electives.
Once applications are accepted, students should process Visa and medical insurance from their country . On arrival, they will be required to pay an elective fee of US$400, for four weeks of study duration.The University will help non- East African nationals’ students to obtain class C residence permits (this should be done well in advance, although assistance will also provide on their arrival). Documents required for permit are:
Photocopy of their passport
Birth Certificate
Letter of introduction from their respective Universities
Duly filled immigration forms
Five passport size photographs
A residence permit fee of US$250.
East African nationals (Kenya,Uganda ,Burundi and Rwanda) will have to apply for exemption certificates which are obtained free of charge.
International Students
The University understands the importance of diverse cultural experiences to a growing nation like Tanzania. International students are admitted if they have qualifications required of Tanzania students. They must also be English speakers.
The University requires all new students to report to the University, on the opening of the University for the orientation programme. An important programme that will introduce new students to the University’s campus, facilities, staff and regulations.
Students can only be registered after paying the required fees.The deadline for registration for all students will be a month from the opening of the University. A student who fails to register at the beginning of the semester in the time will lose the right to register for that semester.
